Polygon Cascade 5 Review: A True Entry-Level Mountain Bike, Reimagined
The all-new Polygon Cascade 5 is designed to make mountain biking more accessible than ever. As an affordable, entry-level hardtail, the Cascade has long been a go-to option for riders looking to hit dirt without blowing the budget. But for 2026, Polygon didn’t just refresh the Cascade — they rebuilt it from the ground up.
This latest generation is more beginner-friendly, more capable for riders looking to progress, and just as affordable as ever. And while this bike might be marketed as entry-level, it’s built with far more in mind than casual bike paths and mellow gravel roads.
Before diving into the full ride impressions and trail test, let’s take a closer look at what makes the new Polygon Cascade 5 such a compelling option.
Polygon Cascade 5: A Ground-Up Redesign for 2026
One of the first things you’ll notice on the 2026 Polygon Cascade 5 is the updated cable routing. The frame now features fully internal cable routing, giving the bike a cleaner, more modern look while also protecting cables and hoses from damage during riding or transport.
But the most important changes aren’t just cosmetic — they’re baked into the frame’s geometry.
Polygon’s updated geometry transforms the Cascade from an off-road-capable hybrid into a legitimate mountain bike. A slacker head tube angle and longer wheelbase dramatically improve stability and confidence, especially at speed or on rough terrain. These updates make the bike feel more planted and predictable when the trail gets challenging.
There’s also noticeably more standover clearance thanks to the shortened top tube. This makes mounting and dismounting easier and gives riders more freedom of movement when navigating technical sections.
Fit, Sizing, and Practical Features
Despite the more aggressive geometry, Polygon has kept the Cascade practical and approachable. The frame is available in five sizes, accommodating riders from roughly 4’9” to 6’5”. Most sizes can also be paired with either 27.5” or 29” wheels, allowing riders to choose the wheel size that best matches their height and riding style.
Every Cascade frame is fender- and rack-compatible, reinforcing its versatility for commuting, fitness riding, or weekend trail adventures. The Polygon Cascade 5 in particular comes equipped with a thoughtfully chosen component package that balances performance, durability, and affordability.
Components That Punch Above Their Weight
Up front, the Polygon Cascade 5 features a 100mm Suntour XCM32 suspension fork. This fork does a solid job of smoothing out rough gravel roads, absorbing trail chatter, and improving front-end traction on loose or slick surfaces.
Traction comes from 2.25” Deli SA-281 tires, which strike a nice balance between rolling efficiency and grip — an important detail for riders still building confidence on varied terrain.
One of the biggest upgrades to the Cascade lineup is the drivetrain. Polygon has ditched the front derailleur in favor of a wide-range 1x10 Shimano CUES drivetrain. This setup delivers nearly the same gear range as a traditional 2x system, but with less weight, less maintenance, and much simpler operation — especially for newer riders.
Stopping power comes from Shimano hydraulic disc brakes, offering consistent, reliable braking across changing trail and weather conditions.
More Than Just a Budget Hardtail
On paper, the 2026 Polygon Cascade 5 looks like a major step forward. It’s no longer just a budget-friendly, commuter-focused hardtail — it’s a bike that’s genuinely ready for real trail riding and rider progression.
That’s exactly why we took it out for a proper trail test.
