In recent decades, these coastal areas have been urbanized at unprecedented rates and mangrove forests converted into other land use. Coupled with lack of effective governance, mangroves have been overexploited and overharvested. In restoring these communities, which are rich in biodiversity, we are reviving fishing grounds that help to create additional income streams.
